kNOT Awards Picnic – August 28, 2021

September 4, 2021

Pull-Tight Players held its annual kNOT Awards August 28 at Jim Warren Park in Franklin. The event was so named because it was “not” the typical Knot Awards, as in previous years. Due to pandemic concerns, the event was changed from a banquet to a picnic. We didn’t have a season to celebrate, so we celebrated our wonderful organization instead. Still, we presented both annual and special awards to deserving recipients.

We met in the screened-in pavilion at the park, and were very glad for a roof later in the program due to a torrential rainstorm. Artist members were able to order picnic-style boxes from Bacon and Caviar or bring their own food. Approximately 75 members gathered for dinner, camaraderie, and a program highlighting events of the past year.

Outgoing president Matt Grimes introduced the program. After brief remarks, he went on to introduce Beth Woodruff and the musicial number “We Won’t Be Openin’ Another Show” (with apologies to Cole Porter). This parody featured singers from the artist membership: Chelsea Craig, JK Gregg, Sarah Kieffner, JT Landry, Lenny West, and Beth.

Matt returned to acknowledge outgoing Board members Tom Gregg, Pat Street, and himself, and to introduce the new Board. New members are Jennifer Bennett, Leslie Berra and Wade Woodruff.

Our annual “In Memoriam” section followed, presented by Jeanne Drone. This year, we honored Greg Carter, Ray Clark, Roz Highfill, Lyn Sullivan Pewitt, and Madelyn Gale Webster.

Special awards followed, reflecting the unusual nature of the past year and the event itself. Iain Macpherson won the Ghost Light Award for his help in maintaining the theater through the months of the pandemic. The Picnic Committee handed out stress balls (Pull-Tight logo balloons filled with rice) to all directors whose shows had been postponed or canceled over the past 18 months. Tom Gregg was awarded Most Patient Director for his work with The Real Inspector Hound.

The rest of the program comprised our annual awards. Megan Roberts won the Newcomer Award, presented by Vicky Stiles. Dan Kassis presented the Behind the Scenes award to Mike Tindor, an employee of our web hosting company, Quikhost. Pat Street presented the Friend of Pull-Tight award to Michael Kelly, owner of the Planning Group. The Techie of the Year award, presented by Beth Woodruff, went to Savannah Aiello for her work with the virtual awards show in 2020.

As outgoing president, Matt Grimes awarded the Cam Davis Spirit award to Lenny West.

The final two awards were voted on by the artist membership at the May Artist Membership Meeting. Last year’s winner, Melanie McBurney, presented this year’s Player of the Year award to Matt Grimes. Jeremy Hargis, as the 2020 recipient, presented the Hall of Fame award to Bill Jones.

The program concluded with a hilarious parody of the song “You’ll Be Back” from the musical Hamilton. Penned by Sarah Kieffner and performed by Jon Keiffner, “We’ll Be Back” celebrated the determined spirit of our Pull-Tight membership. Jon in his makeshift king’s costume, proceeding down the length of the picnic shelter to the strains of “God Save the King,” was the perfect end to a great evening.

Despite rain, heat, and pandemic restrictions, the 2021 “kNOt” Awards Picnic was a welcome opportunity to gather as a theatre family. We pulled tight once again.

Role Change – Pull-Tight Board of Directors

September 3, 2021

Pull-Tight’s Board of Directors regretfully announces the resignation of President Lenny West. Vice-President Carmela Hofstee has stepped up to the role of President effective August 30, 2021.

Lenny provides the following statement:

“While I was truly honored, humbled, and beyond thrilled to be elected to serve as Pull-Tight’s President, it has become increasingly clear to me that perhaps I am not the best possible leader for the Board of Directors at this time. I plan to continue serving this great organization in any ways that I am able. I wish my dear friend Carmela nothing but the greatest success in her new role, and the Board the same in meeting these challenging times and the needs of our patrons and artist membership in ways that allow us to remain intact and thrive.”

During his tenure as President, Lenny spearheaded the herculean task of moving out of our costume storage space to a much, much smaller one, including sorting through a mountain of costumes, making difficult decisions, and organizing the costume yard sale, an event that helped clear out the inventory, raised money for the theatre, and brought a lot of new faces into our space.

Stay tuned for the first President’s Blog from Carmela as she begins her term as Pull-Tight President, and join us in wishing her “break a leg” and our thanks for taking on this role during what continues to be a difficult time.

President’s Blog – August 2021

August 24, 2021

So is anyone out there ready to finally see The Real Inspector Hound? If, like me, you enthusiastically answered YES!, well then, you’re in luck! At long long last, tickets for this production go on sale to the public on August 30!!!

After a long hiatus, director Tom Gregg has reassembled his cast and crew, who are busy rehearsing, putting finishing touches on the set and costumes, focusing the lights, and perfecting this production that we have been waiting to see for eighteen months! I know I can’t wait to see it, and I hope to see you there.

For all who do plan to attend this production, please make sure to familiarize yourselves with the COVID-19 safety protocols that Pull-Tight has put into place for this production. They can be found on the Box Office page on our website. Please note that any safety measures are subject to change at any time as the situation with the pandemic changes. Believe me when I say that the Board of Directors at Pull-Tight is quite literally working nonstop to keep ourselves informed and to make decisions that will serve all of our artists and patrons.

I hope you’ve made plans to join us this coming Saturday, August 28th for our kNot Awards Picnic! So much work has gone into what I’m sure will be a great evening of fun, entertainment, and reconnecting with old friends and hopefully welcoming new ones into our midst. Thanks to committee Chairs Dan Kassis and Beth Woodruff and their team for putting this evening together. If you plan to attend this free event, please register by this Friday, August 27th. I can’t wait to see you all there!

Do you have an interest in directing a production at Pull-Tight? If so, we would like to hear from you. We are currently accepting submissions from potential directors. But act fast—submissions must be in by September 1st! Playreading Committee Chair Jennifer Bennett and her team have been reading stacks and stacks of scripts over the past year in hopes of finding just the right plays to produce during our 2022-23 season, and yours might be just the one we are looking for. More info on the submission process can be found HERE.

It seems a bit unreal that after such a long absence we will open our theaters doors again, and I could not be happier!

See you at the theater!

Pull-Tight board president Lenny West

At long, long, LONG last we are finally almost back!

Hi there! I’m Lenny, your newly elected president. Writing those words, it still seems a bit unreal, but I am beyond delighted and humbled at being given this honor. I so look forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting to work to serve this outstanding organization that has meant so much to me for so many years. Periodically throughout the coming year, I’ll be giving you all the news that’s fit to print. Lots of work is going on behind the scenes in preparation for our long-awaited reopening. It takes a village, no?

Here are a few highlights and things to look forward to:

At our Artist Membership Meeting in May, three new board members were elected to a three-year term. A hearty welcome to Jennifer Bennett, Leslie Berra and Wade Woodruff! Congrats, and I’m so excited to be working with you. To our outgoing board members, Tom Gregg, Matt Grimes and Pat Street, I cannot thank you enough for your friendship, leadership, guidance, and your sense of humor, particularly during this past year.

Brochures announcing our upcoming season have recently been sent out and are hopefully in your hands. Season ticket holders from 2019-20 were also sent a separate letter containing instructions on what to do with your unused tickets from that season. The deadline for transferring those tickets is August 1. See our Box Office page for more info. Box office Manager extraordinaire Johnny Peppers is making the magic happen accommodating these transfers, and we simply cannot thank him enough. Also, a huge thank you to the volunteers who helped sort, fold, label, stamp and stuff envelopes in order to get all this information out. It was a big task, and you all succeeded beautifully!

Thanks to the work of another army of volunteers, a bit of spring cleaning has been going on in our costume department in the past few months. Our big clean-up and clean-out is resulting in a costume giveaway on July 24 and 25 at the Theatre, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. All items in this yard sale-type event are FREE, but donations are accepted. Stop by and see what we’ve got to offer. High school theater departments and other local theaters, this is a great opportunity to find some unique and interesting treasures to add to your own costume collections. Our sincere thanks go to Michael Kelly and The Planning Group for so generously donating space for us to house our costumes for many, many years.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 28. You won’t want to miss our kNOT Awards Picnic at Jim Warren Park. Dan Kassis, Beth Woodruff, Sarah Kieffner, and Chelsea Craig have been hard at work planning this event. It won’t be a typical celebration of a season, but a celebration of our great organization, and will serve as a sort of unofficial grand reopening. This event is free (an optional boxed dinner meal is available for $15) and open to EVERYONE—long-time members of the Pull-Tight family as well as anyone wanting to join our merry band. It’s going to be a great party, and I absolutely cannot wait to see you all! Please register if you are planning to attend. Picnic ticket reservations close August 27; box dinner tickets reservations close Aug 14.

There is much more to come this year. Stay tuned for information on our opening show, The Real Inspector Hound, directed by Tom Gregg, as well as other grand reopening festivities.

Thanks so much for sticking with us during these unprecedented times, and welcome back. We’ve missed you!

See you at the theater,
Lenny West

President’s Blog: June 2021

June 29, 2021

Out with the old, in with the new! My term as Pull-Tight President expires with the chiming of the clock this July 1st, and your swankified Cinderella will revert to peasant status.

It has been a pleasure to serve this fine institution as a board member these past three years. In that time, we have made strides in the betterment of our facilities, our public relations, and our social media outreach. We worked tirelessly behind the scenes, lending truth to the credo of many a college student: “Work hard, play hard.” And as always, we continued (with a brief involuntary hiatus) to offer high caliber and quality entertainment.

In this time of transition, one of renewed optimism as we approach a grand reopening, the Pull-Tight community aims to whet the appetites of all who are longing for the arts. This hiatus is soon to end, and under the watchful stead of incoming president Lenny West, I have no doubt we will all “Pull Tight” in celebration and camaraderie.

All the best,
Matt Grimes
