One of the real “plane people,” Kevin Tuerff, whose experience inspired the character of Kevin T., attended the final dress rehearsal of Come From Away, August 5, in Franklin. Even more special, he stayed afterward to share his story and participate in a talkback with our audience.
Kevin has dedicated his life to carrying the spirit of Gander forward through his nonprofit, Pay it Forward 9/11, which encourages people to honor those lost on Sept. 11, 2001 by performing acts of kindness and compassion that create a ripple effect in their communities.
One of the most powerful moments of the evening came when Kevin talked about the difference between kindness and compassion. Kindness is something we all appreciate, but compassion goes a step further. The people of Gander didn’t simply welcome strangers; they fed them, clothed them, comforted them, and loved them when they needed it most.
Kevin challenged us to remember that compassion doesn’t have to wait for a tragedy like 9/11, or a pandemic. We have the opportunity, every single day, to notice one another, care for one another, and make someone’s burden a little lighter.
Kevin, thank you for reminding us why this story continues to resonate 25 years later. It was an honor to welcome one of the real plane people to Pull-Tight.
