A Letter from the President

There was no Board meeting in April, so this will likely be my shortest letter of the year. I will make up for it next month. With the June issue being my “closing act,” it will be as sentimental as a Hallmark Christmas movie.

Stephanie Dillard has engineered another great issue of Curtain Call. Collaborating with Pat Street and me, this follows the pattern set back in August of a colorful, informative, and fun publication. There are examples of that throughout the pages that follow.

I would like to call attention to the story which features the nominees for Board of Directors, Player of the Year, and Hall of Fame. The voting associated with these honors is at the center of the May 3 Artist Membership Meeting. In looking at their photos and re-reading the bios mailed out earlier, two things occurred to me.

One, this is not going to be easy, not at all, these are some tough choices, with each nominee deserving of this recognition.

Second, I actually smile at the thought of someone asking me to describe the “typical” Pull-Tight Artist Member. Turns out, I haven’t met that person yet.

And still, we share a bond of love and respect for theatre, and for community, and for how those two dynamics come together in harmony at Pull-Tight. Each nominee for BOD, POTY, and HOF respects that in their own unique way, and the mosaic those qualities represent is at the heart of what sets Pull-Tight apart.

See you on May 3, 5:00 p.m. at Pull-Tight Theatre for the Artist Membership Meeting. And a shout-out in advance to Bre Hall and the Community Outreach Committee for making certain refreshments will be available.

Sincerely,
Cabot

Artist Members eligible to vote at the Annual Meeting on May 3 will receive voting packets via the postal service no later than April 10. If you feel you’ve earned voting rights but haven’t received your packet by 4/10, please reach out to Pat Street at Pat.Street@Pull-Tight.com. If you’re not sure whether you’re eligible to vote, read through our voting membership page on the website.

Congratulations to the stellar cast and crew of Harvey on a sold-out run!

Photo credit:  Three Wishes Photography Bravo to director Myna Sowell and the cast and crew of our third Readers Theatre, A Piece of My Heart! The audience of 64 was captivated by this powerful drama detailing the experiences of six women—nurses, a Red Cross volunteer, an intelligence officer, and a USO performer—who served during the Vietnam War, based on true oral histories.

Coming Soon!

Volunteer Spotlight:
MYNA SOWELL

What first inspired you to get involved with Pull-Tight, and how long have you been with us?
My girls were grown, and while I had plenty of interests and hobbies outside of my parenting role, I was ready to get back on the boards. But then that pesky little Covid made its entrance, and I (and the world) got derailed. But in 2023, Funny Money auditions were posted so I threw my hat in the ring. I’ve been with Pull-Tight ever since.

Can you share a favorite memory or moment from your time here?
Not to slight anyone or anything, but my experience with Funny Money will forever be special to me. Not only was I exercising a part of me that had grown rather rusty to say the least, but little did I know such lasting friendships and connections were being made. I was welcomed by everyone with such outstretched arms, and it was very clear that the Pull-Tight community would become beloved.

What roles or tasks do you enjoy most when volunteering, and why?
Maybe it’s the ”mom” in me, but I really love purchasing the opening night snacks for the cast and crew of each production. I like to think of it as a square meal of junk…a little processed protein, white flour carbs, no nutritional value whatsoever sugar-laden snacks!  But when you need a little something to get you through Act II, it hits the spot!!

What has volunteering at Pull-Tight Theatre taught you or brought into your life?
I mean, the easy answer is friendships and connections. Duh. But beyond that is how this group of people really bands together and helps each other. No one is ever left alone with a task.  There are plenty of folks to help with manual labor, technical issues, creative quandaries, promotions, etc. And everyone seems happy to help!  It takes a village to stage a show, am I right?!?!

If you could play any role on stage or in a production crew, what would it be—and why?
If I still sang, my dream musical role would be Big/Little Edie Beale in Grey Gardens. And my dream role in a play would be Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire. Perhaps I have a soft spot in my heart for the mentally and emotionally fragile and unstable!  Man, I love a meaty role!!
