President’s Blog: June 2021

June 29, 2021

Out with the old, in with the new! My term as Pull-Tight President expires with the chiming of the clock this July 1st, and your swankified Cinderella will revert to peasant status.

It has been a pleasure to serve this fine institution as a board member these past three years. In that time, we have made strides in the betterment of our facilities, our public relations, and our social media outreach. We worked tirelessly behind the scenes, lending truth to the credo of many a college student: “Work hard, play hard.” And as always, we continued (with a brief involuntary hiatus) to offer high caliber and quality entertainment.

In this time of transition, one of renewed optimism as we approach a grand reopening, the Pull-Tight community aims to whet the appetites of all who are longing for the arts. This hiatus is soon to end, and under the watchful stead of incoming president Lenny West, I have no doubt we will all “Pull Tight” in celebration and camaraderie.

All the best,
Matt Grimes

Pull-Tight Welcomes New Board Members

June 20, 2021

  • Jennifer Bennett
  • Leslie Berra
  • Wade Woodruff

On May 2, 2021, the Pull-Tight voting membership elected three new members to three-year terms on the Board of Directors: Jennifer Bennett, Leslie Berra, and Wade Woodruff.

Jennifer began her association with Pull-Tight in 2012 with a role in It’s a Wonderful Life. Since then, she has appeared in Suite Surrender, Southern Fried Funeral, Rabbit Hole, Jake’s Women, and Death of a Salesman. She has served in various capacities backstage and on the Playreading Committee for the last two years and as its Chair this last season.

Leslie will be serving her second term on the Board, and will serve as Parliamentarian in the coming year. She first came to Pull-Tight in 2013 with a role in 9 to 5: The Musical. She has been co-advisor for the Teen Youth Actors Guild (YAG) for many years, as well as taking on a number of backstage and committee roles. You have seen her onstage in Catch Me If You Can and Waiting in the Wings, and her work as director in Spamalot and four YAG musical variety shows.

Wade grew up at Pull-Tight, debuting at 8 years old in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He has appeared in Oliver!, Sweet Charity, Anything Goes, The King and I (in which he famously fell off the stage and broke a leg), Stalag 17, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Boys Next Door, 12 Angry Men, and Romeo & Juliet. He directed Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some) and has designed and/or run lights for many shows.

President’s Blog: May 2021

May 5, 2021

All systems are go – we at Pull-Tight are planning our return!

Okay, let’s pump the brakes for just a second and reveal what we can tell you thus far.

It has been over a year since we closed our theater doors. The Real Inspector Hound, directed by Tom Gregg, had to press pause, and who knew how long that VHS tape could hold? Our youth guilds suspended activities. With barely a peep, our second home and arts venues across the nation slowed to a dull roar. Ask any actor – that’s just not in our nature!

But with vaccines now rolling out and optimism beginning to peek back into our daily routines, we on the board felt it was time to begin prep work toward a relaunch. While we want to underscore that everything in these stages is tentative and subject to change, we also want to send a message of hope.

We also want to ban the phrase “in these unprecedented times” … but, one step at an “unprecedented time.”

First off, we plan to press play and present The Real Inspector Hound as the first show of our 2021-2022 season! The opening date is set for September 10, barring any incident or issue. Thank you to Tom Gregg and his dedicated cast and crew for hanging tight during all the ups and downs.

We will also mount four additional productions: The Curious Savage, Crimes of the Heart, Madame Buttermilk, and The Elephant Man. These shows feature smaller casts, and will provide for ample distancing both onstage and backstage, should guidelines make that necessary.

Social distancing and seating capacity caps will be in effect whenever necessary. The season will begin under these provisions as guidelines mandate. For this reason, we cannot offer a season ticket this year, as the number of available seats could fluctuate on a show-by-show basis. We aim to offer normal season ticket opportunities for all current season ticket holders in Spring 2022. We will announce other pandemic restrictions closer to the season’s September start.

I would be remiss if I did not thank some key players who have been instrumental along the way.

  • A hearty heap-full of gratitude to Johnny Peppers and Heather Bottoms, keeping our patrons and Pull-Tight families connected and aware of recent developments over the past year.
  • Much appreciation to Iain Macpherson and Tim Massey for checking on the theater and assisting with maintenance needs.
  • Hip-hip-hooray to Stephanie Dillard for aiding in the renewal of our performance contracts for 2021-2022. It’s not a sexy job, but someone’s gotta do it. And Stephanie does it with such verve and panache!
  • A rowdy round of applause to Pat Street and Dan Kassis for working on the restructuring of our website during this downtime (set to launch in June), and to Jeanne Drone and Savannah Aiello for maintaining our social media presence.
  • Kudos to our COVID response team – Lynda Gibbs, Carmela Hofstee, and Pat Street – for updating us on current expectations and best practices to institute at our theater.
  • Let’s hear it for Lenny West, JK Gregg, and Laurel Aiello for beginning the daunting task of costume room clean-out. I don’t envy you!
  • Give it up, too, for Sarah Kieffner, Beth Woodruff, and Ricki Keckley for donor appreciation efforts. The financial gifts over the course of the past year have been a gentle reminder of generosity in the Pull-Tight family.
  • A final shoutout to the Banquet Committee, who have now quickly become a Picnic Committee! Dan Kassis, Beth Woodruff, Sarah Kieffner, and Chelsea Craig are all aces in my book. (By the by, that picnic celebration will take place August 28. Use that calendar accordingly.)

I’m sure there are plenty more I have managed to miss. So, to everyone who has been a steady force in the Pull-Tight community, know that you are valued and appreciated by all of us.

Keep an eye out for future announcements regarding our plans, and we’ll see you on opening night.

Pull-Tight Recognizes Anniversary of Shutdown

March 13, 2021

One year ago, following CDC guidelines, we at Pull-Tight made the difficult decision to temporarily close down due to the pandemic. Director Tom Gregg and his amazing cast were rehearsing The Real Inspector Hound. They stand ready to present this show for us tentatively in September as we hope to reopen the theatre.

Thank you Tom, cast and crew for your patience and dedication to Pull-Tight. We can’t wait!

Stay tuned for updates.

Pull-Tight cancels remainder of 2020-2021 season

March 1, 2021

"We'll Be Back" sign outside Pull-Tight Theatre

Friends,

As we have entered 2021 with renewed optimism, we at Pull-Tight remain pensive over the current situation regarding the global pandemic.

We have always dedicated ourselves to service. In that same vein, we elected to poll many of our season ticket holders and Franklin community base to determine their sentiments in the status quo. The survey, released in November, produced results that mirrored the line of thinking of many on our Board of Directors. Though some feel as if new protocols and safeguards would be enough of a next step to usher in a resurgence of the arts, many respondents indicated that widespread availability of a vaccine, a decline in COVID cases, or some combination of factors would be the determinants in a future return.

While we had hoped to mount productions on our stage by the turn of the new year, such prospects seem less likely in the here and the now, as COVID cases aren’t quite yet under control. Help is on the way, it appears, though perhaps at a slower pace than many of us may have hoped.

Because of this, we have decided to suspend all performances to our 2020-2021 season. This means the earliest we would return to the stage with productions would be in August, provided federal, state, and local regulations deem it prudent. Current ticket holders for the two shows yet to be performed will be notified of future options.

I believe we can agree that health and well-being for all – our patrons, our actors, and our volunteers – and a safe, considerate environment is paramount above all else. We hope to keep you updated on our status through our website, continued email blasts, and our social media platforms in the interim.

We hope to see you soon.

All the best,

Matt Grimes
