Synopsis

Seasonal Allergies centers on the arrival of a heartbroken Pete Dumbowski at his sister Julia’s doorstep just before the holidays, clutching a stack of pies and mourning his pending divorce. Julia offers up her living room couch until he can get on his feet again. His stay quickly turns into an extended one, causing tensions to rise, Christmas trees to crash through windows, and their friend group to play matchmaker for him and the new girl next door, Emily. This play beautifully blends real-life humor with a touching message about the enduring power of family love. It’s a delightful, family-friendly show that’s perfect for getting everyone in the holiday spirit and ready to eat some turkey (or maybe some of those infamous pearl onions).

Character Breakdown

Julia Shelby: Mid 30’s/early 40’s; a professional chef and owner of a local restaurant in West Chester, New York. Married to Thomas, mother of Charlie, and Pete’s older sister. Organized and very good at what she does; typical older sister: loving but wants to be in control.

Thomas Shelby: Mid 30’s/early 40’s; web/graphic designer, works from home, developed and sold an extremely popular mobile gaming app. Married to Julia, father of Charlie, and Pete’s best friend. A good father and friend; the one who’s most hurt when Pete cancels on Thanksgiving.

Charlie Shelby: Playing 8-10 years old; loves karate. Can be played by a boy or girl. Child of Julia and Thomas. Innocent, fun-loving, and has a strong relationship with all of the adults.

Pete Dumbowski: 30’s; a dentist; in the midst of a year-long divorce. Julia’s younger brother. Endearing, quirky, and a good brother and friend, but very raw and blinded by his own problems through most of the show.

Alison Cusimano: Mid 30’s/early 40’s; a lawyer; 8 months into a rather unexpected pregnancy and despite all her complaining, loving every minute of it. Married to JD. Knows how to take charge of a room and isn’t afraid to speak her mind.

JD Cusimano: Mid 30’s/early 40’s; runs his family’s florist shop; loves the New York Jets. Married to Alison. Good friends with Thomas and Pete; loves to banter with his wife.

Emily Cantwell: 30’s; neighbor of Julia and Thomas; widow. Sweet and quirky, willing to speak her mind and stand up for herself but not in an aggressive way, she is who she is and she’s ok with that.
